KeyWinds Quintet

Guest Musicians

Norma Pannell (flute) was born and raised in the Cowichan Valley and her first music lessons were at age 7 on the accordion. When she started Junior High, Norma decided that she would like to join the school band  and started playing the clarinet and oboe. After four years of breaking reeds, a friend offered to let her try her flute and 52 years later she continues to enjoy her final choice of instrument. Over the years, Norma  has played in small ensembles, pit orchestras for numerous musicals, and has been a member of the Cowichan Concert Band for over 30 years.  Norma was a founding member of the Cowichan Consort Orchestra.

Peter Gillespie's (percussion) love of music began at an early age, when he was fortunate to receive both Piano and Drum lessons.  His interest in drums and percussion continued through high school where he was introduced to classical, rock and jazz forms. Peter pursued this passion in University, attending the University of Alberta in Percussion Performance, studying with Brian Jones, and graduating with distinction.  The University experience opened many musical doors for Peter, as it gave him an opportunity to perform numerous times with the Edmonton Symphony, join two excellent big bands, play jazz and pit orchestra gigs, and even go on tour with a recording pop band.  Peter spends his time now playing with the Island Big Band, performing as a marimbist and percussionist, and as the jazz drummer in the Wayne Kozak Trio.

The KeyWinds Quintet is thrilled that, on occasion, talented musicians from the Cowichan Valley join them on stage to perform works that include extra instruments such as flute and percussion.
