Wholescapes was composed for the AMICI Chamber Ensemble as this ensemble had performed the composer’s work “Chromatissential” in Toronto several years prior. This new three movement trio focuses on a whole tone musical environment and creates interest through the juxtaposing of the two whole tone collections. In each movement, the three instruments are involved almost continuously in musical interactions, sometimes supportive while other times competing for musical prominence. In addition, the musical materials of all three movements are directly related producing three movements carved from the same motives, rhythms, and augmented triadic harmonies. In the first and third movements, energetic musical flow is interrupted by a different version of a dirge-like section.
